Android release

Insight NxtGen released on the Play Store, replacing the previous vendor's mobile app

Released the mobile app under new ownership. The previous vendor's proprietary component was removed, so from this point we could update the app on our own schedule instead of waiting on someone else's release cycle.

The INSIGHT platform brought fully in-house: code, servers, and documentation

Took ownership of the servers and codebase. The first weeks went into reading through everything and building an internal understanding of how the system works. Where documentation did not exist, we wrote it, so the knowledge now stays with us.

Operations

SAP import handled in Martin's absence, then documented so it no longer depends on one person

Ran the SAP import into INSIGHT during Martin's absence, so there was no gap in the data. We also documented the steps, so the process is no longer tied to one person.

Android v1.04

Barcode and QR scanning added for objects and seals, replacing manual typing

This release focused on cutting keystrokes for field teams and keeping the app working on our newer devices.

  • Barcode and QR scanning for objects and seals. Operators can capture identifiers instantly instead of typing them, which removes a common source of errors.
  • Seals can be attached to objects by scanning the barcode, so seal numbers no longer need to be typed.
  • The app now works properly on the latest Android versions and on large or foldable screens.
  • Long object names show in full instead of being cut off on smaller screens.

Android v1.05

Continuous seal scanning added: whole batches captured in one sweep, no duplicates

Built for the days when operators are working through a lot of seals at once. Fewer taps between scans, and no risk of accidentally logging the same seal twice.

  • Continuous scan mode. The camera reopens automatically after each seal, so operators can work through a batch without touching the screen.
  • Duplicate seals are detected on the spot, so the same seal cannot be registered twice by mistake.
  • Active and Historical seals are now in separate tabs, so operators are not reading through old seals to find current ones.
  • Automatic navigation to the object page after a scan, saving a tap on every object.

Windows V2

Windows V2 released, ending manual SAP and KABAL data entry

Second Windows release, bringing the new app to the point where it replaces the old INSIGHT desktop. Focus was on removing manual work that had built up around the old app over the years.

  • SAP and KABAL data can now be imported directly from Excel, replacing manual re-entry and the errors it caused.
  • Price adjustments across a customer's loadout can be reviewed and applied in a few clicks, instead of touching each line by hand.
  • Active and Historical seals are split into separate tabs, so admins are not scrolling past old records to find current ones.
  • A progress indicator on bulk operations, so admins can keep working during long-running jobs instead of sitting and waiting.

Neo v1.0.4 · launch

Insight NxtGen Neo launched on the Play Store: a brand-new mobile app, rebuilt from scratch

Insight NxtGen Neo launched on the Play Store. This is a completely new mobile app built from scratch on modern foundations. It was released alongside the existing app, so operators could adopt it at their own pace with no reconfiguration and no risk to their existing work.

  • Scan objects and seals directly from equipment labels, no manual typing of IDs.
  • Colour-coded inspection date countdowns (red, amber, green), so inspection status is visible at a glance without calendar arithmetic.
  • See who changed any field, and when. Supports our audit requirements and makes data-entry errors traceable.
  • Redesigned seals screen with Active and History tabs, and batch scanning for busy days.
  • Fuzzy object search, so a small typo does not cost a lookup.
  • Test Mode gives operators a safe environment for training, with a clear red banner so no one is confused about which mode they are in.
  • Redesigned picking, routes and delivery flows.

Neo v1.0.5

Neo now recovers expired sessions on its own, and error messages rewritten in plain language

Two small things had been costing operators time every day. Sessions were quietly timing out mid-shift, so operators had to sign back in for no visible reason. And when something did go wrong, the message on the screen usually said nothing useful. Both fixed in this release.

  • Operators no longer get signed out during a shift for no reason. The app keeps the session alive on its own in the background. Signing in again is only needed when the password has actually stopped working.
  • Error messages now say what went wrong and what to do next, in plain words. Instead of a technical failure code, the screen now says things like "no items to pick up" or "the server did not respond in time".
  • Slow lookups can be cancelled with a single tap, so operators can move on instead of waiting for something to finish or fail.
  • Searches that need to read a lot of data now have enough time to complete, so they stop failing when nothing is actually wrong.
  • After finishing a job on an object, operators return to that object (as the old app did), instead of the job list.
  • The loading spinner now shows what the app is doing, so operators can see it is still working.

Halliburton report fixed so invoicing could go ahead

Neo v1.0.6

Object details now load separately from attachments, so heavy PDFs don't hold up the screen

When an operator taps an object that has attachments (inspection PDFs, photos, and so on), the object details now appear right away. The attachments continue loading in the background, so a large or slow attachment no longer holds up the whole screen.

Integration

Work started on getting our containers into MagnetJQS

Began the work to send container data cleanly from INSIGHT to MagnetJQS, an integration we did not previously have. Active workstream since then, working through the identifier questions (GLN vs GIAI vs Container ID), format alignment (containers whose IDs contain dashes, e.g. B-550 becomes B550), which inspection dates to send, payload validation, and communication issues on their side.

Neo v1.1.0

Operators can now reset their own password by email, without waiting for an admin

The single largest quality-of-life release for Neo. Operators can now unlock themselves in a few taps, personalize their view, and refresh objects without losing their place.

  • Operators can reset their own password by email in a few taps, so they no longer wait for an administrator to unlock them.
  • A wrong password shows up immediately at sign-in, instead of the app failing quietly several screens later.
  • Operators can reorder the Details field cards to match how they work. This saves real time for people who open dozens of objects a day. (Change requested by Even Elvik.)
  • Pull down to refresh an object, without the screen going blank.
  • Fixed the issues that had been quietly losing photos and comments from jobs.
  • Accessibility pass for gloved use in bright light: larger buttons and higher-contrast text.

Neo v1.1.7

In-app auto-update added, so devices can now update themselves

Removed the overhead of keeping the mobile fleet on the latest version.

  • The app now offers its own updates through Google Play, so devices update themselves. A release can be marked mandatory when needed, so a critical fix reaches everyone quickly.
  • The domain is chosen from a dropdown (OEG or EUROOFFSHORE) instead of typed, ending the class of failed sign-ins caused by typos.
  • Storage clean-up now really clears when an operator needs it. A hidden cloud backup used to quietly restore old data and get in the way of a fresh install.
  • Location-tracking notification restored on newer Android versions, so operators can see when tracking is active and stop it.

API moved to its own server, so a Web problem no longer takes it down

Received the server configuration from IT and moved the API and the Web application onto separate servers. Before this, if one went down it took the other with it, and vice versa. Now a problem on one side stays contained on that side.

Neo v1.1.14 · mandatory

Mobile app switched to a secure encrypted connection, invisible to operators

The mobile app now talks to the server over an encrypted connection instead of the old unsecured one. Operators did not have to reconfigure anything. The app moved with them, and existing work carried over untouched. This also sets the stage for the new back end going live on Sept 16.

  • Mobile app traffic is now encrypted, so it cannot be read by anyone in between.
  • Every active device updated quickly, thanks to the auto-update capability added the previous week.
  • Fixed a bug where seals marked as delivered on the same day were staying in the Active list instead of moving to History.

Recurring Insight Web outages, and the root cause finally pinned down

Insight Web went down repeatedly and blocked customer access. Emergency restarts (via PCL) restored service each time. While managing the incidents, we identified the underlying cause: a long-standing weakness in how the applications share database access, which was allowing a single stuck request to bring the whole platform down. That understanding set up the Stage 1 fixes that followed.

Stage 1 fixes released for Insight Web, ending the need for emergency restarts

First round of fixes released to address the underlying issue behind the recent outages. This ends the class of incident that had been requiring PCL restarts. Further fixes planned for the following week.

Infrastructure · new back end

New back end goes live after two months of work, ending the one-request-at-a-time queue

The largest single piece of engineering work of the year, and the main reason the app has felt slow up to now. Everything shown in the app has to be fetched from somewhere behind the scenes, and the piece that did that fetching was built many years ago. It could only handle one request at a time, which meant that when several people were using the app together, everyone was effectively standing in a queue behind each other. It also could not be made secure enough for today's requirements, and it was too fragile to extend, so new features were very difficult to add. If a customer had asked to connect their own system to ours, we had nothing workable to offer them. Rather than patching the old one any further, we spent two months building a replacement from scratch. Once it is in place:

  • Many people can be served at the same time, so the app no longer slows down when multiple operators are working together.
  • Built to current security standards, so customer systems can safely connect to it.
  • Designed to serve us for well over a decade, rather than needing to be replaced again in a few years.
  • New features can be added on top without rebuilding anything each time.
  • Any customer who wants to connect their own systems can now do so.

Neo switched over to the new back end, unlocking its full speed for field teams

Neo has felt modern on the surface since launch, but has been talking to the old back end behind the scenes, which caps how fast it can be. Pointing it at the new back end is where operators will notice the speed difference.

Same stability fixes released for Desktop, closing out the outage response

Fixes on the Desktop side that address the same underlying issue behind the recent Web outages. Together with the Sept 7 Web release, this completes the current round of stability work across the platform.

At this point, the recent outages should be temporarily stopped. Both Web and Desktop are covered by the Stage 1 fixes. The fuller underlying fix (Stage 2) is separate work that follows.

Thirteen everyday friction points on Desktop identified, fixes coming next

Ran a full pass through the tasks admins do every day on Desktop (checking object locations, creating loadouts, adding customers, and more) and identified thirteen things that slow people down or catch them out. Seven rated high impact. Work to fix them starts next.

  • Windows that freeze for half a minute during common actions like Show All.
  • Delete prompts that say "one record" but remove every selected row without warning.
  • Windows that close mid-edit without confirming whether the change was actually saved.
  • Silent failures when the app refuses an action, so people retry, assume the record is broken, and work around it.
  • Basic actions like New, Delete and Refresh have no visible buttons, so new coordinators wait for a colleague to tell them the keyboard shortcuts.
  • Every keypress on the busy screens (Current Status, Loadout) fetches data all over again.

Insight Web revamped with a new look, new user experience, and much faster performance

Insight Web is the customer-facing side of the platform, used by our clients every day. Once the Desktop quality work is underway, the next major chapter is a full revamp of Insight Web: a new look, a rethought user experience, and a big step up in speed on top of the new back end.

  • New look and feel, built for how customers actually use the platform today.
  • Rethought user experience, so common tasks take fewer clicks and less time.
  • Much faster on the new back end, so customer-facing screens no longer wait on the old bottleneck.
